Overview

Phaplu Chola Pass Trekking

Starting the Trek Phaplu Chola Pass Trekking from Phaplu is a new and alternative route for your Everest adventure. While many travelers typically choose flights from Kathmandu to Lukla as their starting point for the Everest region, the high flight costs and the additional inconvenience of flying via Manthali, Ramechhap can be quite a hassle. Instead, consider a simpler and more budget-friendly option – reaching Everest Base Camp from Phalpu.

To start this journey, you can either hire a Jeep for a more private experience or opt for public transport such as a jeep or bus from Kathmandu to Phaplu. The drive takes approximately 7 to 8 hours from Kathmandu. It allows you to enjoy the beautiful views along the way.

Phaplu, located around 5 km from Salleri Bazar in Solukhumbu District, marks the beginning of the Phaplu Chola Pass Trekking route. Solukhumbu is divided into Lower and Upper regions, with the latter being renowned worldwide as the Khumbu Region, often referred to as the “Everest Region.” In contrast, Lower Solukhumbu remains relatively unknown due to its limited tourism.

Although Lower Solukhumbu sees only around 100 tourists annually, it boasts beautiful and authentic places to explore. You’ll come across different Sherpa villages like Junbeshi and Loding, as well as a Tibetan refugee camp in Chyalsa Village. This Tibetan camp of Chyalsa was established in 1960 after the chines invasion over the Tibet. The journey from Phaplu to the camp and back takes approximately 3-4 hours, making it an accessible excursion.

Another fascinating destination in Lower Solukhumbu is the Thupten Choling Monastery. I was founded in 1968 by the Rimboche Trulshik from Tibet. So, this monastery’s establishment is linked to the Rimpoche called Trulshik, who settled in Khumbu after fleeing Tibet due to the Chinese occupation. The monastery faced destruction in the devastating earthquake of 1990 but reconstruction efforts began in 2001 and continue to this day. Visiting these two places requires a couple of days, with one dedicated to hiking to Thupten Choling Monastery in Junbeshi and another for exploring the Tibetan Camp in Chyalsa.

Phaplu, your starting point, lies approximately 276 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu. You can reach Phaplu either by land transportation or by flying into Phaplu Airport. However, it’s worth noting that flights to Phaplu are relatively scarce, as airlines prioritize direct flights to Lukla due to higher demand. When taking the Phaplu Everest Trekking route, expect a longer journey compared to the direct Lukla route, which may require a few extra days.

Alternatively, you can take a scenic drive from Phaplu to Buksa or Kharikhola village. While this hike from Phaplu to Lukla, offers, we will miss out the chance to explore local Khaling villages, Sherpa Villages, and the unique hiking experiences from Phaplu to Lukla. Your path will eventually merge with the Lukla-Namche trail at Cheplung, just 30 minutes from Lukla Airport.
