Overview

Annapurna North Base Camp Trek

The Annapurna North Base camp is another Base Camp of Annapurna Mountain. It is least explored and newly found trekking route in Annapurna Region Trekking. This Annapurna North Base Camp is the Base Camp from where French Expedition Team had summited Annapurna I (8091 m) in 1950, 3rd of June led by Maurice Herzog – The French Expedition Team. There were some other climbers in the Team- Lionel Terray, Marcel Ichac and Louis Lachenal and five others alpinists. It was the world’s first successful summit on the top of 8000 meters. Amongst 14 8000 meters mountains of the world, Annapurna I (8091 m) is the 10th highest peak. In fact, they wanted to ascend Mt. Dhaulagiri I (8167 m). According to unproved facts, they missed the trail to reach to Dhaulagiri Base Camp, then they found the Annapurna I by hazard to summit. This coincidence helped to hold the record to Maurice Herzog with his colleagues and the entire French Expedition Team first time summiteer of Mt. Annapurna I. So, Maurice Herzog plus French Expedition Team become the first record holder of Annapurna I. And, it was from the North Face of the Annapurna Mountain.

When the French Expedition Team Leader Maurice Herzog and his mate ascent Annapurna I, just after 20 years, the British Expedition Team had arrived on the top of this giant mountain- Annapurna I (8091 m) in 1970. But it was from the South Face of Annapurna whereas, French Team with Maurice Herzog had done from the Noth Face. Chris Bonington- who was the British Expedition Team leader, had ascent successfully with other climbing members in 1970 May 27th from the South Face of Annapurna I. There were Don Whillans and Dougal Haston. Unfortunately, they lost one of their friend Ian Clough in 30th May 1970 because of serac hit. The British Expedition Team was the team of British Military.

So, there are 99.99% expeditions groups go to ascend Annapurna I (8091 m) from the south-face. But very few people go to climb the same mountain from North Face.
The Annapurna North Base Camp Trek is almost completely wilderness Trekking. There are no any better lodges yet. That’s why, it is almost zero crowed trekking destination till today.
Duration of this trekking is about two weeks. We have walk about 8-9 days while going up to Annapurna Noth Base Camp and need about 4-5 days to get back. Then, you can extend your further trekking to Ghoprepani Poonhill Trekking or Khopra Mohare Trekking. But it depends on your time period.

When you are up in the mountains in Nepal, we would suggest you to be ready for anything. Weather forecasts for Lukla are never correct and different sources will give you different information. If it is a really bad day in terms of weather, the airlines will themselves cancel the flight and you might have to wait till the weather clears. Yes, flying in high altitude is never easy, even on a clear sunny day, the plane might face turbulence because of the wind blowing from the mountains. But overall the flight to Lukla is very exciting and it’s an experience that you will never forget.
