Overview

Tilicho Thorong Pass Trekking-

The Tilicho Lake Thorong Pass Trekking is located in the premise of Annapurna Conservation Area of western Nepal. It is called Tilicho Lake Annapurna round Trekking, too. Tilicho Lake is claimed as the highest lake in the world for its size, Tilicho Lake traces its source to Tilicho Peak (7134m) and is frozen almost all year, making it a breathtaking sight to witness. The trek inside the ACAP region will take you through lush hills, barren dry arid lands, and through vast valleys cut out by the immense Kali Gandaki River. You will also witness many small waterfalls, streams, and suspension bridges with views of the mountains such as Annapurna (8091m), Nilgiri (7061m), and Dhaulagiri (8167m).

Home to the Manangi, Gurung, and a range of different ethnic groups, the Tilicho Lake Trek offers spectacular occasions to witness the unique cultures of the local people met while passing through several traditional villages. The pristine Tilicho Lake calmly welcomes the spectators that marvel at its sheer beauty without affecting it in any way. The villages of Chame, Pisang, Manang, and Khangsar would already have built the excitement in the trekker to relish the pure beauty that the frozen Tilicho Lake possesses. One of the highlights of Tilicho Lake Trekking is the high pass of Thorung La (5416m) which takes you from the Manang region to the Mustang region, making this trek fulfilling in all ways. You will also visit to Hindu pilgrim Muktinath temple, which is one of the most sacred sites for Hindu pilgrims. Feeling the cold winds of Kagbeni, the trek then follows the basin of the raging Kali Gandaki River, where the presence of ammonites suggests that thousands of year ago this region hosted a thriving marine life. Walking on ancient trade routes following apple and peach orchards, you reach the windy town of Jomsom, from where you take a flight to Pokhara and then Kathmandu, the final destination.

Itinerary

Welcome to Kathmandu. Our representatives will transfer you to your hotel after receiving you at Tribhuvan International Airport. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu.

We will leave Kathmandu early in the morning to avoid traffic. As we get out of the valley, we can see the various hills and mountains make up the scenic views. We will take the highway which is next to some fast flowing rivers of Nepal and make it to Besisahar, which lies in Lamjung district. We will then take a jeep ride from Besisahar to reach Bahun Danda, driving along the side of the fast flowing river. Overnight in Bahun Danda.

Through terraced fields with the views of lush green hills overlooking the Marsayangdi River, we cross several seasonal waterfalls and streams as we make our way to the village of Jagat. We can see the stone steps on the way along with many colorful houses. Ascending alongside Marsayangdi River, we walk past many villages until reaching Jagat, a small village with stone houses. Overnight in Jagat.

We will start the trek to Dharapani by walking through verdant forests and crossing suspension bridges. The trek continues alongside Marsayangdi River and reaches few waterfalls on the way. A gradual climb brings us to the first village in Manang, Tal, and we cross a Mani wall to then ascend to Dharapani. Overnight in Dharapani.

Starting our trek early in the morning, we will make our way through the vegetable farms and small villages as we head to Chame. We will walk through steep ridges with forests of various trees, including the vibrant rhododendron. This trek will also provide us with spectacular views of the mountains such as Lamjung Himal (6983m) and Annapurna II (7937m). Upon arrival in Chame, we can visit a small hot spring where we can rest our tired legs. Overnight in Chame.

Making many ascends and descends through small villages and crossing Marsayangdi River on suspension bridges, we head towards Pisang. A narrow and steep trail opens our way to Paungda, which is a curved rock rising up 1500m from the river below. This day will also give us breathtaking views of the Annapurna massif and Pisang Peak (6091m). From here, we make a steep descend to Upper Pisang, where we will stay for the night.

With outstanding views of Pisang Peak (6091m) and Annapurna massif, we will make our way to the popular village of Manang. As the weather becomes colder and the landscape becomes arid, we will visit the 900 years old Braga Monastery, which is the biggest and the oldest monastery in Manang. As beautiful as the scenery is during the day, at night, Manang provides a wonderful opportunity for stargazing and astrophotography. Overnight in Manang.

Today to acclimatize, we will make short trips around Manang. Located in the Marsayangdi valley, Manang is a beautiful place to be at. The stone houses with stacks of wood for fuel and the many prayer flags make the picturesque scene of this place. We will make our way to Chongkar viewpoint for the day from where we can see magnificent views of various peaks of the Annapurna range along with many surrounding mountains. We will spend some time around the tranquil Gangapurna Lake, situated on the foot of Gangapurna (7454m) and its glacier. Overnight in Manang.

Leaving Manang, we will head to Khangsar village on a cliff above Khangsar Khola. As we cross Khangsar village, we will be met with wide grasslands, and we gradually begin our climb up the hill to reach Tilicho Base Camp. From atop the hill, we will be provided with magnificent views of the valley below. The base camp comes after a steep incline, which one must cross with great caution. From here, we will be able to see the snowcapped mountains such as Nilgiri (7061m), Annapurna I (8091m), and Dhaulagiri I (8167m), among others. Overnight in Tilicho Base Camp.

After a tough rocky ascend, we will reach a moraine with views of Nilgiri (7061m) and Annapurna (8091m), which leads us to the pristine Tilicho Lake. Tilicho is considered the highest freshwater lake in the world for its size, and from here, we will get to admire its mesmerizing beauty. If we are lucky, we will be able to see the reflections of the mountains on the lake, which most of the time remains frozen. The turquoise color of the lake is enough to fill calmness in every person who visits the lake. After taking some pictures at the lake, we will make our way to Siri Kharka for the overnight stay.

A sudden change in the landscape can be seen and felt as we make our way up through alpine vegetation to reach Yak Kharka. Yak Kharka literally means yak grazing, which can be seen in grasslands with breathtaking views of the Annapurna range as the backdrop. We will walk past the ruins of an old village and cross log bridges and a suspension bridge as we make our way to Yak Kharka and then to Ledar, where we stay for the night.

Today we will make our way up through huge cliffs before reaching the village of Thorung Phedi. This is the last settlement before we cross the Thorung La Pass (5416m), where we will be likely to walk on snow. From the village of Phedi, we will be able to see the up-close views of mountains such as Thorung Peak (6144m) and Khatungkang (6484m). Overnight in Thorung Phedi.

Today we will trek to Muktinath, which is considered as one of the most sacred places for Hindus. We will do so by crossing the Thorung La Pass (5416m), which takes us from Manang to the Mustang region. We will start the trek very early to get to the top of Thorung La and get magnificent views of the great Himalayas around us. After enjoying the amazing vista of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, we will descend to Muktinath, where the temple has 108 holy taps and two small dip pools in front of it. The priest of Muktinath is a lady monk as Muktinath is sacred to the Buddhists too. Overnight in Muktinath.

From Muktinath to Jomsom is mostly a downhill trek. As we move down, we will be able to see many mountain biking groups making their way down along with cattle and the rare people. Set up in a cold desert, on our way back, we will be able to witness the vastness of the valley cut by the Kali Gandaki River. The Kali Gandaki River is also famous for ammonites, which the Hindu take for an incarnation of Vishnu. We will pass Kagbeni and on the way will see multiple Chortens and stupas with colorful prayer flags tied around them. Continuing to walk on the Kali Gandaki River basin and crossing a wooden bridge, we will reach Jomsom, the windy headquarter of Mustang district. Overnight in Jomsom.

Today we will take an early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, flying over the deep Kali Gandaki Gorge. After the early morning flight, we will have plenty of time for sightseeing in Pokhara and for relaxing by Phewa Lake or enjoying boating in it. The beautiful city of Pokhara is a popular tourist destination for many and has the most amazing array of restaurants, pubs, and shops to keep you occupied. If you are interested, we can visit Davis Falls and Mahendra Cave situated inside the city. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Pokhara.

Today we will leave Pokhara early in the morning to head towards Kathmandu. Along the way, we can enjoy the beautiful sceneries of rivers, hills, and mountains. The winding roads along the hills are typical of Nepal and can be found everywhere from the east to the west. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we transfer you to your hotel.
